Sky on Bike project in India is one among the International Astronomical Union projects happening all over the world. SPACE is doing this project in collaboration with IAU. Many Astronomical evenings and solar observations have been conducted at various NGOs in and around Delhi.

Under this project, we are carrying telescopes on bicycles, and we’ve zealously named this arrangement as “Sky Bike”. We are using these sky bikes with the aim to foster science education and dispel myths, as myths related to celestial events are rampant in many areas of India.

Team SPACE along with their volunteers conducted a solar observation with the students of SPARSH NGO, Kalyan Vihar on 28th February 2017 from 3pm to 4pm. February 28 is celebrated as the National Science Day to mark Dr. C.V. Raman’s discovery of the Raman Effect for which he also received the Nobel Prize in Physics in 1930. This major scientific achievement is celebrated across India during which students of the schools and colleges demonstrate various science projects as well as national and state science institutions demonstrate their latest researches.

A group of 50 students from the economically weaker sections of the society enthusiastically attended this event. These students learnt many facts and features of our parent star the Sun. They were made to observe the sun safely through the SKYBIKE using solar filters. They were also made to observe the Sun through solar view goggles and the students also identified a visible sunspot.

Students participated in various other activities as mentioned below:
1. Safe Solar Observation: The students observed the Sun through a 200mm Dobsonian telescope. The features of the Sun were also explained to them.
2. Hydro-rocket Launch: The students witnessed multiple hydro-rocket launches and were told about various parts of a rocket.
3. Make Your Own Constellations: The students learnt about constellations and made their own constellation.
4. Catch the Meteors: The students learnt about meteors and how Earth’s atmosphere helps in saving us from space rocks.
5. Ring the Planets: Students learnt about planets through an interesting activity.

Ms. Jyoti, Coordinator and other teachers associated with the SPARSH NGO appreciated the initiative of SPACE and said, “The knowledge gained by the students in the workshop will help them in their future”. Ms. Sapna Sukul, Director stated that “The conduction of the workshop was superb. The students were happy and got to learn a lot”.
